Durgapur (Bengali:দুর্গাপুর), is a city in the state of West Bengal, India, located about 160 km from Kolkata, in Burdwan District. It was a dream child of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second chief minister of the state. The industrial township was designed by Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk^[1] and is home to one of the largest industrial units in the state, Durgapur Steel Plant, one of the integrated steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited. Alloy Steels Plant of S.A.I.L. and Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (C.M.E.R.I.), a C.S.I.R. laboratory, are also here. Allied ICD Services Limited, the custodian of the only operational inland port (ICD Durgapur) in Eastern India, is situated in Durgapur as well. There are four power plants Durgapur Projects Limited (D.P.L.), Durgapur Thermal Power Station, Damodar Valley Corporation & N.S.P.C.L., and some chemical and engineering industries at Durgapur. Some metallurgical units have come up in recent years. The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (earlier known as Durgapur Regional Engineering College) is one of the most prominent seats of the Indian Central Government's Engineering and Technological Education.

Madangopal Jiu Temple, West Bengal, India - www.vishvabhraman.com

Madangopal Jiu Temple (Bengali: মদনগোপাল জীউ মন্দির ) is a temple in in the village of Mellock, near Samta, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The temple is locally known as Gopaler Mondir, which literally means the temple of Gopala, that is, Krishna.

The temple is a terracotta ornamented aatchala (roof with 8 slopes) temple of Radha and Madangopal and was built in the 17th century AD by Mukundaprasad Roychoudhury, a descent of the Roychowdhury Zamindars of Mellock. Then the Rupnarayan River used to flow not far away from the temple, but over the time it changed its course and has now moved further away.

The temple is now in ruins. Reconstruction work was started in the early 2010s but stopped midway

Darjeeling Carnival, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. - www.vishvabhraman.com

Darjeeling Carnival is a ten-day carnival arranged in the town of Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.

The carnival consists of several functions like poetry-reading sessions, painting and photo exhibitions, tea-drinking ceremonies, a Land Rover rally, music concerts and ethnic food festivals. The Carnival was started by a group of young people in Darjeeling known as the "Darjeeling Initiative", and its main purpose was to get over the violent agitation in the eighties amongst the youth of Darjeeling. The carnival is usually held in the month of November every year. Darjeeling being famous with local Rock Bands, the music concerts are especially popular among the people.

An important enhancement to Darjeeling Carnival, an annual 10 day cultural event held in Darjeeling India was the participation of the Russian Cultural Centre, which staged an exhibit of Nicholas Roerich reproductions along with a photographic exhibit highlighting the cultural links between India and Russia. Master artist Nicholas Roerich long considered the most significant cultural link between India and Russia spent some of his most creative working years in Darjeeling in the 1920s which gives this hill town an important place in this scenario. The exhibition was displayed along the Mall so that everybody could enjoy it and had a tremendous response, from its estimated well over 40,000 viewers.

Since time immemorial, people of Kolkata have had a special place in their hearts for Darjeeling. The sweet nostalgia of family holidays in the hills or the legends of children who have been educated here have created an unbroken bond between Kolkata and Darjeeling, their Queen of the Hills. Darjeeling Festival will be the celebration of this special relationship.
